# mem4dev

> mem4dev is the context layer for AI-assisted development. Everything that happens in your projects, connected, current and shared with your team and your agents. It has a native MCP server so AI assistants such as Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor or VS Code can read and write that context directly. Spanish version: https://mem4dev.com/llms-es.txt

## What it is

mem4dev stores the decisions and activity of your projects as text entries, organized by scope and tags, and searches them by meaning. It has a public Model Context Protocol (MCP) server at `https://app.mem4dev.com/mcp`.

- **Current**: when an entry replaces another, the old one archives itself and stops showing up in searches.
- **Connected**: every entry links to others (what caused what, what implements what) and to your code: commits, pull requests, issues, branches and URLs.
- **Shared**: you invite your team to a scope; people and AI assistants read and contribute to the same context, each with their own permissions.

## Who it is for

- Developers who code with AI: the project context their assistant lacks between sessions.
- Freelancers and technical consultants: one scope per client, with its history at hand when they ask for it.
- Tech leads and engineering managers: the team's decisions, connected and current, in one place.
- Development teams: sharing scopes between people already exists on every plan; the Teams plan (organization account with company scopes) is coming soon.

Use cases: ask "what did we decide about X?" before touching a module, log decisions (ADRs) from the editor, keep work/clients/side projects apart.

## How to connect

- **MCP server**: `https://app.mem4dev.com/mcp`, OAuth 2.1 with PKCE and dynamic client registration. When you authorize you choose read-only or read-and-write access, and all your scopes or just some.
- **REST API**: `https://app.mem4dev.com/api/v1` with API keys (`Authorization: Bearer mk_live_...`), read-only or read-and-write, with per-scope permissions.
- Claude Code: `claude mcp add --transport http mem4dev https://app.mem4dev.com/mcp`

## Context, security, data and permissions

- **Context for the AI**: every scope has its own context and instructions for the AI; entries carry a date, tags, attachments and versions, and are searched by meaning, tags and date range.
- **Security and privacy**: accounts and scopes are isolated (also in the AI's answers); entry text is encrypted in the database (AES-256-GCM) and traffic uses HTTPS; sign-in by email link or passkey (Face ID, fingerprint); OAuth 2.1 with PKCE for AI assistants; private attachments with short-lived signed links; deleting an account gives a 30-day window to cancel, then everything is permanently erased.
- **Your data is yours**: export of a whole scope to JSON (download link by email; owner only), version history with restore, and scopes that can be shared read-only or read-and-write.
- **Per-scope permissions**: invitations by email with a read or read-and-write role (they expire after 7 days; only the owner invites and revokes); API keys with their own scopes (read always, write optional); MCP authorization read-only or read-and-write, for all scopes or some; everything can be revoked.

## Public limits and pricing

- Entry text: 5,000 characters. Entries per bulk call: 20.
- Attachments: 10 MB per file, 5 per entry (pdf, images, docx, xlsx, pptx, txt, md, zip, rar). Upload only from the web app, not via MCP or API; MCP can read and download them.
- REST API: 120 requests per hour per API key and endpoint. MCP: per tool and per hour, `query_entries` 20, `get_related_entries` 60 and 30 each for `add_entries_bulk`, `update_entry`, `delete_entry` and `link_entries`.
- Search: 20 results per page.
- Pricing: Free plan with no credit card and no feature restrictions (MCP and API included), with volume limits: 1 scope, 1,000 entries, 1,000 interactions a month and 100 MB of attachments. Individual plan, available now (from USD 7.99 a month: 10 scopes, 10,000 entries, 10,000 interactions a month, 1 GB), and Teams: coming soon. Sharing scopes is available on every plan (the limits are those of the owner's plan). Every API call, every MCP call and every question in Ask counts as one interaction; what you do from the web app does not count. At the entries limit only creating more is blocked; at the interactions limit the API, MCP and Ask pause until it renews. Nothing is deleted.
